Then, Gmail arrived and exploded the whole notion of desktop email clients forever, almost overnight. It was fast, robust, logical, and integrated – many things Outlook still isn't to this day (Outlook 2010 + IMAP is pure hell).

Slowly, Google brought out more and more features that made the fine line between web and desktop emailing thinner and thinner, and today, it finally disappeared, at least for me.

The final nail in the coffin turned out to be something I'd desired for a very long time – taking screenshots and pasting them directly into Gmail in the browser window. Inline image pasting from the clipboard if you will.

I take a lot of screenshots of my desktop or certain parts of it when doing reviews or reporting bugs (with OneNote or SnagIt), and having to save the image, find it on the disk, and drop it into Gmail, while relatively easy, was still too cumbersome. In that regard, Outlook was great – I could quickly pump out a few screenshots and send off an email with all of them inline with text in only a few seconds. If I attempted to do that in Gmail, I either got nothing or a little image basically saying how full of fail I was.

It all changed with Firefox 4 (at least that's my theory) – I am now able to take screenshots and paste them straight into Gmail, right in the browser. Let's take a look:

Amazing, isn't it? This does not work for me in Chrome 12 or IE 9 – only Firefox 4 at the moment. I'm not sure how it works or why it started working only now, but I'm sure one of you will eventually come here and provide a sensible explanation.

Goodbye Outlook, I hardly knew ye.

It's always important to know for developers what browsers they are developing for, who dominates the market, and what the current trends are.

I have gotten my hands on the Plaxo.com visitors' browser stats for December of 2009.

This information is valuable because Plaxo has a relatively general demographics, as it's not a site only geeks or only moms visit, and the statistics tends to not be skewed. Therefore, as you can see, Firefox doesn't occupy the same share as you might see on a techy site (on this site, more than 50% of users visit in Firefox).

Also, since Plaxo has a couple million monthly visitors and therefore a couple million data points, statistically speaking these numbers are relatively accurate.

Without further ado, here is the data, with some spiffy charts.

Thoughts

• Internet Explorer is doing remarkably well – it is still most definitely the primary browser, so testing it should be planned accordingly.
• Internet Explorer 7 is by far the most popular version with 65.9% of all IE versions, followed by IE6 at 17.2% (wtf??), and only then IE8 at 16.9%. This definitely came as a surprise to me – both in how popular IE7 still is and how pathetic Microsoft's efforts to upgrade Windows users up from IE6 have been.
• Safari and Chrome are neck and neck at 6.20% and 4.6% respectively, with Chrome gaining rapidly.
• Opera is doing undeservedly badly – 0.6%. That makes me sad.
• IE 999.1? Interesting. I wonder if it's some sort of an uber hacked version.
• And, instead of conclusion: damn you, IE6! Why can't you die already?

Here's where Firebug comes in with its JavaScript debugger. I'm used to using a debugger in every language I deal with, so using Firebug is a no brainer. Since it supports breakpoints, stopping execution and inspecting local variables and the rest of the scope generally beats alerts and console.logs for me.

Here's what a typical breakpoint looks like in Firebug:

It's easy to set breakpoints in static scripts – just open the Scripts tab, select a JavaScript file from the dropdown menu, and click to the left of the wanted line number.

Then, when the page is reloaded, if your breakpoints are triggered, Firebug will pause script execution and transfer the control to you.

In most cases, the method above is the only method of setting breakpoints you will ever need to use.

The Problem With Dynamic JavaScript

However, what if the JavaScript file where you need to set breakpoints is not static but instead dynamic (generated on the fly). If you set a breakpoint in this case and reload the page, the breakpoint will most likely disappear, especially if the JavaScript url is generated uniquely every time.

The Solution

If you have access to the source, the solution comes in the form of the

debugger;

keyword. Just add it to your dynamic JavaScript generator or into any JavaScript file you have access to exactly where you want Firebug to break, and voila – it does.

More so, this method also works in Google Chrome and IE (if you have Microsoft Script Debugger). Here is a screenshot of my Chrome Beta 4.0.266.0 triggering:

I consider this feature relatively unpublished and therefore awesome because:

• it's hard to search for this specific meaning of the keyword "debugger" when Firebug itself is a debugger and it's a very popular word
• nobody really reads documentation for Firebug, and even if they do, I haven't actually seen the debugger keyword mentioned
• I didn't know about it until recently, even though I've been using Firebug for years

Of course, you need access to the code for this to work, so it's not going to work if you're trying to debug someone else's JavaScript.

And finally, don't forget to remove any traces of 'debugger' from your code when you go live or your users will rightfully hunt you down.

Favicons are those 16×16 pixel tiny icons you see next to site urls in your browser and bookmarks. Not surprisingly, this was done as a 20% project, which is when Google developers get to work on anything they want, quite similarly to the monthly "haxo"s that Plaxo runs (that is where I work).

One would give up and accept this futility but I had 2 reasons to keep trying to figure out why:

• my co-worker's battery would consistently hold twice as much charge as mine – by the time I was at 50%, he was at 75%
• a wide range of responses on Internet forums and blog posts suggested some people experienced excellent battery life, while others, like me, did not have as much luck

I thought I tried everything:

• I kept WiFi and Bluetooth off when I didn't need them (I even got an app that turned WiFi on and off on schedule – Timerriffic; unfortunately until Hero gets Android 2.0 we won't see automatic Bluetooth scheduling)
  
• I tried to use the Spare Parts app which provided insight into battery usage history. I did not, however, find out anything significant
  
• I tried to avoid using GPS altogether – at one point Spare Parts told me GPS usage by Google Maps, Camera, and Bump were 5-6 hours each, even though I turned the GPS off. I think it's a bug in Spare Parts itself or what Android was recording but it made me paranoid.
• I switched to using Handcent SMS due to the bug in default Message app (which was later fixed in the firmware upgrade).
• I got a task manager (Advanced Task Manager) to see what apps are running and make sure especially heinous is eating up my resources. It would also automatically kill long running apps and certain apps I know I don't use and which I can't uninstall, such as IM, Gmail (I use Mail), and Finance.
• On some days, I stopped using the phone altogether, just to see how long it would last. The result, however, was the same.

Nothing worked. Consistently, my phone would run down to 80% by the time I got to work and by about 3pm, it would be at 50%.

The Solution

Finally, a few days ago, when comparing my phone with my co-worker's, I noticed he didn't set up automatic email checking, opting in for the manual method instead. I, on the other hand, set up my email the day I got my Hero and never revisited the settings since. "How much power can downloading emails suck out?" I thought. Boy, was I wrong…

Turns out a LOT. I had 3 email accounts and they were checked at the following intervals:

• my gmail was being checked every 5 minutes – I wanted near real-time notification but could not even fathom the consequences at the time
• my beerpla.net account was hit every 15 minutes
• my Plaxo work Exchange email fired every 30 minutes

In order to change these intervals, load up each email account's inbox, click Menu, find Settings, go to Send & Receive and then Set Download Frequency.

After I set each email account to check every hour instead, my battery life improved dramatically. To be fair, I watched the battery use for the last 3 days without changing my usage habits and recorded the results.

Here they are:

• by the time I left for work in the morning, before the change I would oftentimes be between 85 and 90% battery. After the change, I was at 95-97%.
• by lunch time, my phone would usually run down to 50-60%. After the change, the battery had 75-80% juice.
• by 9-10pm, after I came back from work, I would usually need to put the phone on a charger because it was <15%. After the change, I was at least at 50%!

The Side Effect

Lately, I started to realize that having email notifications pop up this often was actually more distracting than useful. I was losing concentration and constant context switching made me less productive.

The fix for my battery problem was, incidentally, also the fix for my concentration problem.

Conclusion

Be very much aware of your email polling intervals or they will suck all the life out of your phone.

But where was I? I have been closely following Android news since its inception, then the introduction of the first phone – T-Mobile G1 (aka HTC Dream), followed by G2 (aka T-Mobile MyTouch 3G, HTC Magic, Google ION), the introduction of the app store (Android Market), and noticing throughout all this time that Android was still not quite there, not appealing to the masses, and not picking up speed. But then…

The Hero

I believe the market perception of Android is about to change because of the newest Android phone – HTC Hero. Thanks to Phandroid (my favorite Android blog) for the announcement.

Why

Hero has a super sexy Sense user interface. Just check out this video of the European version of Hero running Sense (the US version looks slightly different):

Hero also has:

• Flash support (!) – the one from Adobe, not the one that helps taking photos. That means playing flash games, videos, etc, which iPhone does not support and is not planning to support in the near future.
• First Android phone to support multitouch. It also has a trackball.
• Lipophobic coating – special coating to repel fingerprint oils.
• A speedy 528Mhz Qualcomm processor.
• 5MP camera with autofocus – 5 megapixels is a step up over most of the competition, except maybe Nokia.
• GPS.
• Digital compass.
• MicroSD slot for expanding memory.
• WiFi 802.11b/g.
• Accelerometer.
• Audio supported formats: MP3, AAC(AAC, AAC+, AAC-LC), AMR-NB, WAV, MIDI and Windows Media® Audio 9.
• Video supported formats: MPEG-4, H.263, H.264 and Windows Media® Video 9.
• And of course, it runs Android applications.

When

Hero is already released in Europe and is coming to the US to Sprint on October 11, 2009.

How Much

Speed/Lag Concerns

Initial reviews of the Hero reported occasional lag, especially with a lot of widgets activated on the home screens. However, it looks like the latest firmware updates may have fixed the lag issues. We will see very shortly.

The Chin

The US version of the Hero does NOT have the "chin" like the European version does. Compare the picture of the EU version (below) with the pictures of the US version (further down in the Media section).

A short while ago, Peteris posted his very thorough experience interviewing at Google. Needless to say, the level of detail is astounding. Unfortunately, he didn’t get the job but the post is very positive and informative. Here is the gist and a short excerpt:

• There were 3 phone interviews and 5 on-site interviews.
• Peteris flew in all the way from Latvia, fully sponsored by Google. They paid for his flight, hotel, transportation, and food – brilliant!
• The interviews were very technical, with an emphasis on algorithms.
• Google’s preferred language seems to be C/C++, though I know they use Python extensively as well.
• If you’re interviewing, you better be very solid in computer science theory and data structures. At the same time, they treat every error in code very seriously, so even memory leaks are not acceptable. In fact, it looks like a few such mistakes cost Peteris his potential job.
• The questions included data structures, networking, OS/filesystem, algorithms, and past work experience.
• Google, of course, treated Peteris to a great lunch.

In order to prepare for his interviews, Peteris reviewed lots of both theoretical and practical problems. He posted a great list of books:

• Fast – Chrome loads extremely fast, blazing even. Granted, my Firefox would probably load fast if I didn't have any addons as well. Sites like Amazon or Digg load very fast. New tabs open instantly.
• Slow – http://www.blinkx.com/videos/channel:itn, seems like the combination of flash and html (or JS) on one page makes scrolling and redrawing quite slow.
• Very fluid design – I love how the tabs flow around when you drag them or make them pop in or out, I love how fluid animation and resizing is.
• Internal task manager – an absolutely brilliant idea. Since each tab and plugin get their own process, they don't affect each other. Any freezes are isolated to the process itself, so the days of hung browsers because of some buggy javascript should be gone gone (I'll actually have to see how well it works first).

• Great Google search integration and overall Firefox3-like url bar behavior.
• The word search functionality is amazing – best out of all browsers. It's incredibly fast, even on large pages, highlights all the matches, with the current one in orange, and more importantly, gives count (finally!). The search popup complements the fluidity perfectly.

• History – looks great and has a timeline style. It's like reading a journal.

• View Source – again, best in class. Highlighting and line numbers by default. Url access style: view-source:http://digg.com. Search spread highlighting on the right. It's close to perfect, without using any plugins.

• My bookmarks, where art though? Where's the bookmarks menu? I know the homepage has them, and there's a pretty hidden way to make the bookmarks bar appear all the time (right click on it while on the home page and check 'Always show bookmarks bar' but that's not what I want. I like placing many-many bookmarks named with 1 or 2 letters onto the bookmarks bar (I found a way to emulate the behavior in the screenshot below). How can I create duplicates of the same bookmark in different places? It seems you can only bookmark in one. The interface to get around managing the bookmarks isn't well thought out, you can get to certain places only the certain way. How do you export/import bookmarks after the initial installation (I chose to skip mine)? Edit: Apparently, you can't yet.

• The homepage button is missing (though it can be enabled by Options->Show Home button on the toolbar). Why is it not on by default?

• I also enabled the following option right away (the main reason I use TabMix Plus for Firefox):

• Scrolling is very choppy and goes in huge jumps on my laptop (not the case in Firefox).
• Status bar – why do you disappear automatically when I get close to you? You can be so useful and display so much useful info? Stop disappearing!
• What with the Vista-style buttons? I have Win2k menus, which I find a lot simpler and easier on the eye. Why not inherit the window style?

• No Linux support. Hopefully coming soon.

• No addons supported or announced yet.

In conclusion, I understand the browser is very new and will probably go through many facelifts, UI changes, bug fixes, and enhancements but it has a lot to cover and if it's going to try to rival the giants, it better fix some things fast. I personally won't start using it until some addons start showing up, like the AI Roboform (AI Roboform has actually responded to this guy about such addon possibility) and Adblock Plus ones. However, for occasional browsing, it's great. Give it a spin.

You whip out your phone, go to Google Maps, pull up the StreetView (remember this?), which zeroes in on your location using a built-in GPS, and then changes as you move the phone around using the built-in compass.

You then virtually walk the city, looking around, without actually moving an inch (looking for the closest ATM, restaurant, etc, hint-hint?).

Visual voicemail and slide zoom touch interface from Apple, compass from Google, … from Sun? What's next? My Sprint contract is up and I am definitely looking forward to Q3 and Q4 of this year!

Virtual walking aside, there are some really creative uses of this feature posted in this video by the Google team today. I never myself thought to check my own street for street cleaning signs – saves a trip downstairs! Or look at the toll road prices (like the Bay bridge toll). Last year, Sun already made an announcement of JavaFX, a Java-based mobile platform but didn't provide any concrete timelines, so I was excited to hear the more on the subject. With Apple iPhone's advent last year and Google entering the same space later on this year with Android, Sun's addition to the game definitely won't hurt consumers. After all, competition usually leads to better products.

So when is the phone coming, Jonathan? My guess is you're going to try as hard as possible to compete with Google's second half of 2008 timeline but are you going to manage to beat it? And will it blow us away? I guess time will show.
